Series: Driven by Despair #1
Author: Leigh Maynard
Genre: Modern Gothic Romance
Release Date: February 7, 2023

A dark, modern gothic reimagining of the British fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears…
“I don’t know where I am, or how I ended up on this snow-buried tract in the middle of the forest. I don’t know where I’m going.”

I came home to find a woman asleep in my cabin. She’s alone, injured—mine to care for until the storm passes. A shot at redemption I don’t deserve after what I’ve done.

She says she doesn’t know who she is—is she lying to me? In the end, it doesn’t matter. I don’t have to trust her. I just need her to trust me.

But the more time she spends here, the more the cabin’s shadowy corners reveal the secrets I’ve been keeping while a dark threat looms in the forest beyond.

She says a life with me is all she wants, but I know that can’t be true. When she finds out the truth about herself, will she stay? Or will she try to run once she realizes not everyone leaves these woods alive?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A woman with amnesia ends up in the rustic snowcapped home of a widowed logger, rough around the edges, but with a good heart. Of course, they fall instantly in lust with each other, and the story is more about their sexual tension than figuring out who she (later given the nickname Sunshine) actually is. With only a few side characters, it’s a deep dive into the hearts of our two main characters.

I really enjoyed how the story began. It had a really spooky vibe. There was something really compelling about the way Sunshine struggled for her identity, but fought primarily for survival without any idea who she was or why she was lost in the snowy woods. At first, I thought Baer was going to be a bad man, but he is really just a grump with a heart of gold. But man did I feel some very real waves of dread there in the beginning. I know I am in for a treat when my reactions and emotions feel real and palpable. It was sweet watching Sunshine and Baer fall in love, and heart-wrenching when it came time for them to make some really hard choices about who they wanted to be. Both of them are terribly tragic and deserve a happy ending, too. There are some twists and turns along the way that are dark. Like super dark. Parts of the story are haunting, parts are passionate, and lots of parts are sweet. Also, there is a good doggie, too.

“Numbness held me in place as I closed the notebook and tucked it inside the wig. What did this mean? Is the Oliana mentioned in the notebook me? It had to be. But what was this about being set free? My bio parents died in a car accident.

For a second, I felt like I was standing next to a furnace, smoldering in its waves of heat. I hurried out of the attic and stood outside, trying to catch my breath.

Rain pelted my face as I glanced up at my parents’ window on the second floor, then at the driveway where Mom’s minivan and Dad’s pickup were parked. Inside the house, the lights were on in the kitchen. Probably doing what they always do together, cooking dinner.

Grief hollowed my insides. Now was not the time to confront them about what I found. Besides what was I going to do? Tell Mom, I was snooping and found something that freaked me out?  The problem was I wanted to go in there and disturb their happiness, so I could get answers about what I’d read. Answers about the handwritten note to Mom by the woman I believed was my birth mother.”

Chapter 1 – The Grass Thief

“Watch your left!” shouted the leader of the golden eagles. Before the angel could maneuver to his right, blinding lightning struck across the dark clouds, just missing his left wing. The very next moment, deafening thunder numbed everything. The angel and the accompanying eagles held their nerves and pushed through the expanding wall of clouds. The leader of the eagles anticipated growing dangers and feared they would get lost. He yelled, “I can’t help you if I can’t see where we are going. The storm is escalating into a tornado. We won’t be able to withstand these powerful winds for long. Everyone, move up above the thunderstorm. We’ll resume our journey from there.”

The angel and the eagles listened to the leader’s call and flew up above the clouds. Looking down on the thundering clouds, the leader took a deep sigh of relief. He quickly turned his head toward the others to check their condition. “What happened to your wings?” the shocked leader screamed at the angel.

The angel looked instinctively on his sides. There were no wings but flapping arms. A sudden gush of panic infused in him as he realized he was just a boy and not an angel. Right away, the horrified boy fell into the dark mushrooming clouds, screaming from the bottom of his gut. His arms and legs kept flailing in despair until he disappeared into the dark swirling storm.

Siba lives in a world of pure imagination. A world where dreams are reality, and where people can learn the language of animals and nature. Siba is a sensitive but stubborn boy, wise in some ways and innocent in others. The aspect of Siba – The Eternal Quest that I liked the most is that there are lessons to learn. As the animals and nature teach Siba patience, peace, and wisdom, we too learn them. And as Siba looks around his world and regards it with honor and respect, so too do we. This is a fun, imaginative read for young adults who want something with depth and learning.

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Date of Publication: May 12, 2022
Number of pages: 441
Word Count: 128000
Cover Artist:Ammonia Book Covers

Book Description:

Her special abilities can save lives, but so can they kill.

Rovena Silvex has hunted and eliminated dozens of demons throughout the ten years since her initiation as a hunter. Possessing supernatural skills only makes her job a lot easier.

When she’s asked to visit the county morgue to look over a deceased victim and find out what demon killed him, the body rising from the dead is the last thing she expects.

Now Rovena is stuck with a walking corpse and no answers as to how he managed to return to the world of the living. However, the victim has changed and the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes that what crossed over might not have been the soul of the dead man but something much worse.

Complications arise when her new assignment is targeted by demons hell-bent on making sure he stays dead for good.

Killing demons has always been a piece of cake. Keeping one alive however, is a whole new ballgame for her. If she fails, she risks setting in motion a war between heaven and hell. But if she succeeds, she could trap a powerful Lord in a world he doesn’t belong in, forever.

Rovena reached out again, hoping more contact would provide more insight. It didn’t happen often, but sometimes she got another glimpse into the victim’s life when she prodded further. It was the only tool she could make good use of now, and she was desperate enough for answers to try again. Even if reliving his death was the last thing she wanted to do. Or see.

She extended her fingers, dreading touching the cold skin but determined to do it just the same.

A cool breeze behind her ceased her progress. She froze with her fingers midway to their destination as goosebumps broke across her skin. She whirled around, expecting to find someone or something standing there.

The space behind her was empty.

Tiny tremors pulsated across her palms. Not the usual response when a demon was nearby but an alarm that warned her something otherworldly was at work.

Something otherworldly that she couldn’t envision.

Thank the heavens for her built-in danger detector. Not many in her field were blessed with the same, and hers always came in handy, even if she couldn’t always find what hunted in the shadows.

The inability to see what had momentarily entered the room suggested it wasn’t a demon. But whatever it was had moved on as quickly as it appeared.

She turned back to the corpse in front of her and nearly jumped out of her skin.

His eyes were wide open and staring right at her.

What the actual fuck.

Rovena had seen some crazy shit in her life, but this was bizarre even for her.

Fast as a cobra, he struck, aiming for her throat. She had no time to react before his hand closed around her windpipe. Glowing red eyes glared up at her while long, lean fingers tightened dangerously around her neck. The man forced her back as he sat up and slid off the gurney. The blanket covering the lower half of his body fluttered to the floor and pooled at his feet. He stepped over it as he pushed her toward the wall behind her, his grip narrowing as he moved.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Talk about action! Rovena is a demon hunter with special abilities beyond her peers, which few possess. Evil is lurking around every corner, and the activity has amped up in alarming and mysterious ways. Roven is taken for a twist when she must protect what she would normally have to destroy, which makes for an interesting conflicting dynamic. Since this is notably part of what will be a series, there is some dense world-building, which is essential to a big, lengthy story. And the setting is unique and dynamic. Centeno packs a punch with her vivid writing style, giving us a main character who is sensitive but also kick-butt.

Bite Club (Vampire Bakery Cozy Mystery, Book 1) by Corrine Winters

Bite Club
Book 1 of Vampire Bakery Cozy Mystery
by: Corrine Winters

Tessa Lively, a vampire in recovery, is learning how to feed on energy instead of the blood of screaming innocents.

And what better place to settle down than her old hometown? There’s even the bakery she and her husband founded two hundred years before, available for the taking. All she needs is a fake ID and a dream.

Of course, the witch whose identity she stole isn’t quite as disappeared as Tessa had thought. And she’s brought along a pesky PI who seems to know more about magic than he should.

The icing on the cake? Rebecca, the witch who previously owned the bakery, had more than a few dark secrets—and left behind a very high-maintenance familiar, Creampuff, who insists that Tessa drop her hot cross buns and get to solving Rebecca’s murder.

At first, Tessa thinks that a seventy-eight-year-old dark witch dying of a heart attack sounds rather mundane. But when someone else drops dead in her shop, she’ll have to race to find the killer before she and her unlikely friends are next.

Can Tessa solve the case? Or will her deepest secret be revealed, sending her on the run again—or worse?

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Bite Club is a cute little story about the friendship between a vampire, a talking cat, and a baker. And murder. Did I mention it’s also a story about murder? Like three of them. Don’t worry, it’s nothing too gruesome. But our main characters, Tessa (the vamp), Creampuff (the bougie cat), and Bridget (the granddaughter of the former witch-owner of the bakery) must solve the mystery of who the killer is or killers are and their motives before it sabotages the success of their cute little bakery, the Dark Bun. Nothing like a quaint story about monsters, magic, and mayhem. This is my first foray into the realm of “cozy mystery.” I found the lack of intensity and suspense to be refreshingly lighthearted. There was more wholesome warmth to the story than tension or mystery. I really enjoyed watching the two women (and one cat) navigate their differences, confront challenges, and keep their spirits high.

When the clandestine Baby Farmers, and their brutal leader Miko, arrive to snatch his daughter, Michael must make a split-second choice: risk his own freedom to protect hers… or lose her forever. Mandate Thirteen is a gritty dystopian thriller for fans of Children of Men, A Handmaid’s Tale, and The Running Man.

“An action-packed, cross-country adventure between father and daughter as they dodge authorities, reconnect with old acquaintances, and meet new people (good, bad, and crazy), forging connections at every stop. I loved every aspect of their journey and how they learned so much about themselves on the way. This is dystopian in every way that matters. A worthy addition to any library.” Preye, Literary Darlings

Michael is not the world’s best father, husband, or provider. The world is in shambles– a very realistic scenario just a few generations beyond our now. It’s a plausible future with the reality of unchecked climate change, further possible as we allow religion and conservativism to snatch away personal freedoms and individuality. Their world is the end result of the mistakes, ignorance, and discrimination of today. There’s no real lengthy explanation of the science behind their present environmental conditions, so you just have to take the scattering of details at face value for what they are. Rising sea levels and falling birth rates are the primary environmental issues our characters navigate. Again, there is no scientific explanation as to why fertility rates are low, they just are. I wish that aspect was a bit more fleshed out as I love a detailed, vivid dystopian world.

This is a story of betrayal, corruption, and hope where you see both the best and the worst in humankind. There is a lot of action in between moments of character development and emotion. I think this book did a fairly good job at keeping pace. It was neither too slow nor hurried along. I’m also a fan of endings that aren’t happily ever afters, but still make you feel as if there is a chance that everything will be alright.

All in all, this was a very touching and exciting father-daughter adventure set in an unfortunately very possible reality.

Riggs is a rich bad boy Dom and Blakely is a rich girl on the run from her oppressive father. Whose father just so happens to be the business partner of Riggs. Riggs hatches a plan to get back at his crooked partner by corrupting his precious daughter, who is really little more than a disappointment to her father. Long story short, Blakely finds herself on the auction block of a BDSM club. But hey, it’s for charity. Riggs, who is powerfully attracted to the much younger girl, bids and wins, thus securing him a submissive in training. They are contracted for one year. For Riggs, it’s a win-win. For Blakey, well, not so much.

Riggs is the typical “alpha male.” The kind who will threaten bodily harm to anyone who even so much as looks at his girl. Real toxic masculinity, though I hear some women like that sort of thing. And Blakely is in over her head. I can’t imagine Riggs’s frustration as submission doesn’t come naturally to the young woman. But he is determined to break her in. The sex scenes are hot, but otherwise they are so sexually incompatible that you sometimes lose hope for the pair. So many times I’m like… Blakely, girl, are you even trying to fulfill your end of the contract? At first, she makes very little effort to abide by the rules and live up to the lifestyle she committed to. But I suppose BDSM has a very, very big learning curl. And did I mention that the sex scenes were hot? Because they were. And watching the two of them figure out each other was very fun.

Society, suitors, and…serial murders?

As much as she desires to please her family, gently-bred herbalist Jessa Caldwell has no intention of making a suitable match—not when she’s seeking the truth about the taint of the fae that lies within her. If she’s to escape the madness brought on by fae-touch, she must devote her energies to seeking a cure.

But then mysterious tattoos begin to appear on the citizens of Avons. None recall receiving these harbingers of death, but all die at the hand of an untraceable killer days or weeks after being marked.

When the tattoo appears on her beloved mentor, Jessa seeks the Magistry with information on the case—yet they refuse to consider her findings, so she must risk both social censure and her own safety to hunt for the killer herself.

Her one possible ally represents her greatest fear—the encroaching Otherworld consuming her mind—and may well undo all her efforts to control her fae-touch. Yet if she forsakes the offered aid, the killer will go free.

Something sinister stalks the streets of her city, and she must decide…how far will she go to stop the killing?

Tattoo of Crimson, a gaslamp fantasy novel, is the first book in the Blood of the Fae series. If you like quick-minded heroines who solve cases with logic and intuition, beautiful yet deadly fae, and Otherworldly intrigues, then you’ll love this mystery set in a world of manners and mythical monsters.

This is my first official foray into the genre of gaslamp fantasy, which I hadn’t even heard of until this particular novel. But I love the setting, the world, and the details of the quaint but supernatural Victorian life. High fantasy has always been one of my most beloved genres, and I like how this one weaves the history into it.

Jessa is my kind of woman. She is the sort who would thrive in the independent modern age. But sadly, she lives in a time and society that places lots of restrictions upon women and what is deemed acceptable for them. She still manages to navigate the world as herself, sacrificing only what she can. Even in the face of murder, threat, high fae, and storage, powerful houses. She investigates many mysteries at once as there is more than just a secret killer. It seems everyone around her has their secrets be they family or friends.

I enjoyed the story immensely. There are a lot of twists and turns, and man does nothing happen conveniently, which gives the mystery a complexity of plot flow that I love. It’s such a dense, well-woven world, too. The effortless, beautiful detail makes it easy to sink into the world in which Jessa lives uncomfortably with her Otherworld intruders. And the writing style is appropriate historically, so you can feel the time and era in the very tone. It’s these kinds of immersive reads that carry me into new worlds.
