It’s been over a year since Jimena kidnapped Nic and locked him in his basement. Turns out demons love being adored, even by serial killers. This long-term toxic relationship that’s become a marriage hinges on Jimena’s ability to show he is reformed.

What better way to do this than by adopting a feral cat… or seven. Jimena’s new obsession shows him the dark side of humanity and how cruel they can be to unwanted pets.

His murderous intent is now misguided and used to avenge the animals that can’t protect themselves.

It’s an improvement, sort of. Except the demon cop that’s helping keep Jimena out of jail is bringing up old feelings and Jimena is considering upgrading in demons. Might upgrade from avenging pets to avenging people too, because these mass shootings involving children are getting a bit annoying.

Jimena and Nic continue their toxic love story that may not last much longer, especially if Jimena locks a demon cop in his basement.

About the Author

Nina Schluntz is a native to rural Nebraska. In her youth, she often wrote short stories to entertain her friends. Those ideas evolved into the novels she creates today.

Her husband continues to ensure her stories maintain a touch of realism as she delves into the science fiction and fantasy realm. Their three cats are always willing to stay up late to provide inspiration, whether it is a howl from the stray born in the backyard or an encouraging bite from the so called “calming kitten.”

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Jimena the Hero. The cat rescuer. Maybe he will keep his promise to help, even if he is a psychopathic serial killer who can’t form healthy connections with other people. The good news is that only demons give him the time of day, but they are hardly paragons of virtue. In fact, Jimena is famous amongst the demon clans, and he becomes pretty famous within his community for his acts of heroism that save many lives. His efforts at reform are notable, but he is still a vicious killer at heart. The Jimena that we know and love is still essentially the same man. And then Arty comes along with his Greek God body and curly hair and sweeps our resident psychopath off of his feet. I liked that both of them were simultaneously attracted and repulsed by each other because, yeah, that tracks. The plot hits close to home because it features COVID-19 and public shootings including within a school. These are the things we deal with every day now. Arty gives Nic a run for his money and might be better for Jimena in the long run. Underlying the plot is the fact that Jimena is profiled, and his serial killer M.O. is pretty accurate; he is one mistake away from having everything taken from him. Since Jimena cannot ultimately control his impulses, it’s just a matter of time. I also liked that the demon world is expanded, with Gods making an appearance. There’s some interesting lore that is fleshed out enough to be relevant and interesting. Can’t wait for the next book to see how JImena confronts his next challenges.
